What to know before you drive abroad

Is my US license valid?

A US license is accepted in many countries but not all. In some countries you need an International Driving Permit alongside your US license. Get one before departure through AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance. Takes about a week and costs around $20.

Left vs right side of the road

About 35 percent of the world drives on the left including the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, India and most of the Caribbean. Rental cars in those countries are set up for it. Adjustment takes a full day or two, especially at roundabouts.

Automatic vs manual transmission

Manual transmission is the default in most international rental fleets. Automatic vehicles are available but cost more and book out quickly. Reserve in advance and confirm at pickup. This is especially relevant for travelers with hand or arm mobility limitations.

Accessible vehicle rentals

Hand controls and adaptive equipment are available through specialty rental companies at many major international airports. Book four to six weeks in advance. Hertz, Avis and Enterprise all have accessible rental programs but inventory varies significantly by location.
